Teaching Your Basset Hound to Stay

1. Put your dog in a sitting or down position, then step before him, holding a flattened palm to his face.
2. Look at his/her eyes and say “Stay” in a firm voice.
3. After a second of rest, lean down and say “Yes, Good Boy/Girl!” and treat. Then say “Well, what will be the release statement from “Stay.”
4. Working with time the longer the stay, then vary upon request; this will prevent you Basset learning to stay only for a period of time.
